Of all the things new parents have to think about, getting the right baby changing station might not exactly be a top of the mind priority — until, that is, they actually have the baby and realize that an ordinary table top or a computer desk is simply not going to do the job. Of course, the requirements for a baby changing station are relatively simple.
Very obviously, it has to be able to support the baby’s weight. It should have rails to prevent potentially dangerous accidents. It might also be convenient if it comes complete with cabinets so that diapers, wipes, baby powder, and other necessities can be stored easily nearby.
A Clean Place for a Dirty Job
Of course, the place where parents most often need baby changing stations most desperately is out in public. That’s the beauty of the stations available in public restrooms at all sorts of locations including movie theaters, sports stadiums, convention centers, hotel lobbies, and office buildings. Indeed, one major change many have noticed is that, not so long ago, it was nearly impossible to find a baby changing station in a public men’s room.
Not too surprising considering that until well into the 1970s and beyond, such tasks as diaper changing were widely deemed “women’s work.” Regardless of whether they are found in men’s or women’s rooms, however, pretty obviously the main issue with public changing stations is sanitation. That’s one outstanding reason why bringing along extra sanitary wipes for cleaning off surfaces is a standard practice among parents.
Of course, many prefer simply using portable baby changing stations. The obvious benefit being that parents know exactly who’s been on it. Better yet, having a portable station means they will always have a changing place handy, no matter where they are. Fortunately, many of these portable units are very lightweight and easy to store and carry. They also may have an emotional side benefit for baby, as the more familiar surroundings of his or her own station may be reassuring.
A baby changing station is never going to be a product that particularly excites anyone but, heaven knows, it’s one parents and small children cannot easily do without. Actually, we take that back, if you suddenly find yourself without any available changing stations, you’ll get plenty excited about them.
